On a family trip a few years ago, we got a flat on the interstate and pulled over to change it. I had my family get out of the van and go stand up the embankment behind the guard rail for just this very reason.

I’ve never understood putting school buses on interstates. They are too flimsy for such speeds.
Likewise allowing semis to travel at rates that require 500+ feet to stop.

One thing school buses are not is flimsy. Crude, yes... but they’re tough critters.
Also, allowing semis to travel that fast isn’t the issue. the faster they go the better IMO, in most cases. The less they interfere with other traffic the better. The issue is lack of stopping ability. And while a loaded semi is never going to stop as fast as a car, I believe they can be equipped to stop a lot faster than they can now. The whole industry is ripe for sweeping tech changes as far as I’m concerned—but they need to be enforced.

The frames are very beefy, but any intrusion above the bumpers is met with almost zero resistance.

Or maybe, you know, don’t hire a 77 year old driver with 14 suspensions on his record so there will be a far less probability of the driver making an illegal u-turn in the median of a six lane interstate.

Clearly not flimsy at all, if you get hit by a semi and look like the above, you are extremely sturdy.
A bigger concern would be just poor high-speed handling.

I defended school buses last time, and I’ll do so again, it looks like it held up very well. Collisions with trucks rarely look anywhere near that good.
Really dangerous situation to have it pulled over on the side, given its size.

Absolutely, when our kids were younger and we had to do emergency diaper changes or vomit cleanup, I always pulled off past the shoulder and into the grass (which is a catalyst fire hazard by itself...) and moved with the speed of a pit crew. Being exposed to 80mph traffic 5’ away from your body is terrifying.
For a tire change, I bust out the picnic blanket and send them over to the treeline to relax.

Nah. Maybe if you ram it with a forklift, but for any realistic collision it’s still tough as nails. The skin is quite thick, there’s a very robust skeleton for rollover protection, and down the sides and around the back you’ll notice what are basically mini guardrails mounted on it. Any blunt object that hits it—like another vehicle—will spread out the force along the entire bus. Not to mention, the passengers are mostly above the impact area. Some links:

Edit: HOLY SHIT. Fuck that guy. I hope every parent of every kid sues the shit out of the bus company.

Been rear ended in a Minivan by a Semi can confirm, the problem with Semis is Physics plain and Simple Physics.

One problem is that our trucks have drum brakes, whereas European trucks have disc brakes, which stop sooner and are easier to replace.

School buses have always been deathtraps. The only reason nobody notices is people don’t usually hit them.

The problem is they’re not companies in the US, they’re school districts, so it’s basically suing a government organization that also happens to teach your kids.

When I saw the mid on the bus’s tires and the angle of the impact (before I read they were ‘rear-ended’ I figured one of the two were in the median or on the shoulder illegally.
I’m surprised none of the other adult bus passengers were cognizant enough of what was going on to report it to the news.

Yep, and so do both of my kids (7 and 5)...so it’s not a frequency thing, probably perception/mechanics.

If it’s anything like our area each bus driver is n independent contractor unless it’s a school owned bus.

All of ours out here seem to be owned/operated by school districts and drivers they employ. We get bond votes periodically for new buses, but the driver pay comes out of the taxes that go to the schools.
We also have a system that is almost completely flipped from Canada in regards to driver licensing.

It depends on the area, sometimes they’re run by the local school district, sometimes private contractors.

Well, banning semis might be a good preemptive measure against an inevitable machine uprising. I read Stephen King, I know what’s coming.

I got my school bus license at 17 years of age and was getting paid to drive a bus before I turned 18. I think I was a fairly proficient driver, but I took some ugly chances and in the main, I think a 17-YO isn’t the ideal age, any more than 77.
